The Little Mermaid is an iconic sight in Copenhagen. The sculpture was inspired by ballerina Ellen Price, who in 1909 danced the lead role in the ballet “The Little Mermaid” at the Royal Theatre. It is not the same story as our Disney movie. This story is the Hans Christian Andersen (I’m sure the original story.) version and it doesn’t end well for the mermaid.
On our walk about today we saw an overview of Copenhagen.

The military area has many barrack type apartments that have been remodeled for both current military and students. The guards were guarding a garrison area along with the memorial for those Danes who had died during their service. Denmark is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. The Queen signs documents coming from the Parliament, but never does not sign.

After our tour we walked through the old town to get to an area called Christiania. This area has hippie people that have squatted in this small, but great location of Copenhagen since 1971. They live a free communal lifestyle with cannabis being sold and used even though it is illegal in Denmark.

We visited a new exhibition at the North Atlantic Contemporary Art Museum about Greenland. Greenland is an autonomous part of Denmark. Here we learned some polar bear facts:
–they can grow to almost 10 ft. tall and weigh over 1300 lbs.
— they can swim over 100 miles without a break.
–they have black skin underneath their fur.
–their fur looks white but is transparent
