Pécs, Hungary

Hungary

Mohács, where we docked this morning is the sight of a battle between the Ottoman forces and the Kingdom of Hungary. King Louis II actually drowned trying to retreat from the Ottomans that totally outnumbered the Hungarians.

This area is known for its fertile farmland in the Carpathian basin. They do not have to use as much fertilizer or insecticides, so much of what they grow is organic foods. They grow corn for ethanol to try to limit their dependence on foreign imports.

Cathedral

The town called Pécs, pronounced Page, is about a 30 minute drive from Mohács. It is a larger city with an impressive old town. The Catholic church has a Bishop here and 14 times the Bishop here has become a Cardinal, they have hope for a Pope from Pécs. School children swarmed around the Cathedral this morning, their poor teachers had their hands full trying to keep them quiet.

The only Mosque in the city started as a Christian church and later with the Turks became a mosque in 1543. After the Turks it converted to a Catholic Church. Today, after many changes to the building over the years it is used as both a Catholic Church and is used for Muslim services. It has both a cross on the top as well as a crescent moon, which represents the guidance of God on the path through life. What an interesting idea, an under one roof connection of two religious groups.
