Buda and Pest

Budapest has old town views from the river that are one of a kind. Since we were here in 2017 the chain bridge where we are docked has had a facelift.

We revisited the Matthias church and walked the streets of Buda. This week they prepare for a visit from Xi, China’s President.

Chimney Cakes are in abundance throughout the city, but boy do they taste yummy.  We had a cinnamon cake without Nutella. The soft dough is wrapped around a stick and then deep fried.  They sprinkle on the cinnamon and sugar and then remove it from the stick. Just unwind and enjoy.

Pest has the second largest Synogogue in the world, only NYC is larger. It was originally built in the mid 1800s. It has an organ, which is unusual for a synagogue, Orthodox Jews will not attend because the organ being played on Sabbat is considered work. They do have a gentile and not a jew that plays the organ.

During WWII it was inside the Jewish Ghetto.  Many Jews were killed or died in the ghetto of starvation. There are several mass Graves for those who could not be identified and then some that are marked, but all died from the end of 1944 – 1945. The synagogue was damaged during WWII and not redone to match the way it was originally until 1991.

We walked to the Hero’s Square area and walked to the top of the roof of Ethnography Museum, it is a new museum that opened in 2022.

After about 17,000 steps for the day, we had a snack called a Langalió, which was pretty much a pizza and took a subway back to the ship.
