Gödöllói Palace

Just 40 minutes outside of Budapest is a suburb where in 1850 a Hungarian family built and lived in this palace. They then sold it to another family and then it went to the Hungarian government. The government gave it to Franz Joseph I and Queen Elizabeth (Sissi) as a coronation gift. Since 1920 it has been used by a government family, the Soviet Army, as barracks and as a hospice. In 1994, they began to fix up the palace and restore the 168 rooms to its glory.

Sissi was a beloved queen, who loved coming to Hungary and staying at this palace. The guide told us that she liked getting away from family in Austria and loved to walk for hours on the palace grounds.

Our plans were to come back and take the tram to the market. We had no problem with the metro yesterday, but today we could never get the app to work for the tram, so we walked. After going to the Grand Bazaar in Instanbul, this market felt tiny, but we purchased the traditional paprika.

It’s our last evening in Hungry; onto Bratislava tomorrow.

Good night Budapest!
