Southern Cotswolds

Bibury
Steps like these are all along the water and were used to be able to clean the wool.

Bibury was where we started this morning. It is on the river Coln, which is a tributary of the Thames.

Then we moved on to Malmesbury, which is where Æthelstan, the King of the Anglo Saxons and then the first King of England lived.

Where wares were sold.
The Abby
How the Abby started, but 2/3rds has fallen.
Guards in the upperoom kept thieves from stealing from the wealthy churchgoers.

Below is Lacock Abbey, which is in the town of Lacock. It is owned almost entirely by the national trust, which is a private organization that protects the heritage of England. Lacock Abbey and the village have been featured in the Harry Potter films, standing in for parts of Hogwarts and Godric’s Hollow. The village has also been used for Downton Abbey, Wolf Hall, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The church has a connection to the Royal family.

St. Cyriac’s Church
Must be imagined without cars for the films.

This is a beautiful hotel (below) in the tiny place called Castle Combe. It is about 10 miles from Bath. No new houses have been built in the city center since 1600.

These used to be cottages for the workers, but now are expensive hotel rooms.
A clock without a face, used to time the bells.
Library
I removed the other people for our Christmas card picture.

This is the Church of St John the Baptist in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. This is close to Tetbury, where King Charles has his country estate, Highgrove.

Finally a long necked sheep to end the day.

  1. I think yesterday was my favorite day, but I loved the village and being so close to Highgrove was interesting and of course, the long neck sheep…didn’t know they had those!Shawn Frische
