Today the long and winding road went to Salamanca, Spain. While we were close to the border, we were 2 hours away from the city.
The market in the center of Salamanca has food you would not see in Amarillo. Not sure I need any further explanation.
Salamanca began as a settlement long before the Romans arrived. The area was inhabited by Celtic peoples, and the Romans later made it an important stop on their road network.
The university began in 1218, and is going strong today. It has buildings in the old town, but also newer buildings outside of town.
For good luck on their exams the students find a frog with a skull on the façade of a building. The skull represents death, while the frog has traditionally been interpreted as a symbol of temptation, particularly sexual temptation. In other words, the carving can be read as a warning to students:
Don’t let temptation distract you from your studies.
