Magical Casablanca

Months ago when we began planning this trip, I didn’t even know how to spell Morocco. We both are very excited to learn about the people and culture of this northern African country.

Flying in this morning we laughed about how brown the area was around the airport. The wind hit us as we walked down the stairs from the plane. Amarillo? We had to laugh.

As we came in from the tarmac we saw a girl holding a sign with our names. Her name was Fatima and she was there to take us through immigration and make sure we made it quickly through and not have to wait in any lines. Now that we have been spoiled, Houston will forever be a terrible experience.

“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”

What a spectacular place to start our trip. It opened in 2004, and was designed to recreate the bar made famous in the movie Casablanca. Kathy Kriger, a former trade advisor at the American consulate in Casablanca had it built in an old 1930s mansion. Today it stays booked 5 years in advance.

We had a table right in the middle of the main atrium, next to the piano. Walt Disney could not have done a better job with making you feel like you were right there on the set with Humphrey Bogart.

“Here’s looking at you, kid.”
