On Our Own

The cruise is over and we have taxied to the other side of the city. We are staying at the Ocean Porto, a small hotel that we mainly booked due to its proximity to the airport and more importantly, the laundry mat (Magic Water). We do enjoy the laundry mat, always an experience. When the receptionist was explaining the amineties, she told us that we were welcome to use their surfboards for free. I almost laughed out loud.

A Portuguese lady tried to help us with the cost, our credit card would not work, but then we asked the owner and realized it was a client card, not a credit card. The Portuguese lady apparently thought she had been overcharged and she yelled at the owner and finally left.

The machine would not give us change when we paid for the dryer, but a little girl and her mom came in and told us she would put the rest on her laundry card and she gave us our change. Very kind people here.

Lisbon Laundry before we got on the ship.

The cost on the ship for laundry is ridiculous.  For underwear it is $5.50 each and a shirt is $10.00.

Favaios Laundry

In Favaios, the ladies go to the river and use these two basins to wash their clothes.  They have done this all their lives and love to do laundry and gossip.  We didn’t try this option. 😂

We walked this area of Porto, just off the Atlantic, called Matosinhos. There are some updated buildings and others that are just falling apart. The beach is nice, lots of surfers, but the waves seemed small.

Pizza Hut, McDonald and Burger King corner.
Jellyfish?
Fish in the left corner, today’s catch.

For dinner we walked about 8 minutes from our hotel. I ordered Sea Bass and they went over to an iced tank and picked up the whole fish and asked me if half of this was too big. That was a first for me. They grilled it and it was delicious. Bryan had an octopus again, he said it was very good as well.

Tomorrow we jump on a plane to Casablanca. The first stop for dinner is Rick’s.

  1. Can’t wait to hear about Casablanca. Sheila and I have watched the movie on Valentines every year since we first started dating.

  2. What’s wrong with beating the clothes against the rocks for cleaning and letting them dry out on the hot rocks?
